Winter Escape 2012: En Route to Brisbane

As we continue our drive south, we head for Airlie Beach for a night stop over. We are on the Bruce Highway; through many sections of this drive, we appear to be the only ones on the road. The dramatic open space is magnificent. We drive by many sugar plantations dotted with some banana plantations. We are still in very tropical Queensland. Airlie Beach is a small beach town; holiday makers are everywhere; young families, couples of varying ages, including the backpackers. It has the feel and sound of hot summer days.

Central Square: Bunderberg

The next day our drive to Bunderberg seemed endless. We check in our motel in the early evening. As we stroll into town we discover a town with large boulevards flanked by historic looking buildings. It reminds us of the 50s/60s era; a perfect setting for movie making.

The picture on the left is the Central Square in Bunderberg that depicts the peak of the early Australian settlement in this town; it is famous for its rum industry.
